Raising Bilingual/Biracial Kids

Once again I've been too busy to be able to write this post on Monday so here it comes, a little late.

Raising my children with several languages and cultures is something I'm really proud of. I think that having my kids with the man I chose at the time was a great choice, since that gave my kids a unique mixture that will make them special wherever they go.

Some of you might already know that my kids are a lovely mixture of Spanish, Finish and Moroccan genes. On the outside you can't really tell them apart from other Spaniards, so in that way I don't think they'll ever have a cultural crisis. But what's going on on the inside is a different story.

My kids are trilingual since the day they were born - their first language is Spanish since it's my mother tongue and the language I speak with their father, their second language is Swedish since they were born in Sweden and it's the language my parents use with my kids. When my kids were babies their father used to speak to them in Moroccan Arabic, but after a few years it got harder and harder for him so he decided to use Spanish instead. But when we moved to Morocco they learned to speak perfect Moroccan and also classical Arabic.

Lot of people think that raising a bi/multilingual kid is a piece of cake, but no, it's not at all like that. First of all, you yourselves need to be fluent in the language you want them to learn, because in many cases you're the only linguistic reference for your kid. You need to be able to sing children's songs in the language and read bed time stories, in order to give them the cultural aspects of the language. You have to celebrate the holidays and incorporate them into your family's normal day to day routines. And here is where many problems start because not everyone has a partner that agrees with this. And most important of all - never give up! Even if your child doesn't seem to understand when you speak your language with him/her and he/she answers in the mayority language, keep on going, because in spite of everything, your kids is learning, he/she just isn't ready to speak the language just yet. It might take 2, 5, 10, 15 years but whenever he/she feels confident enough - or in a situation where no other language will do, you will be surprised to hear how well he/she speaks the language!

I think I've given my kids a good cultural start since they have lived in Sweden, Morocco and now in Spain. They are able to blend in in all their cultures, they speak the languages, they know about the culture and religious life and they know that they have the freedom to chose wherever they want to live in the future. My kids and I know that "home is wherever you lay your hat" and that it is posible to have several places in your heart. I think I've achived my goal to raise international kids and I'm extremely proud of my babies.

Oh no, not again!

Oh yes, unfortunatelly it's true, I've got a cold... Again! I think it's the third time this winter, so far....
It's really really cold here right now. The weather is ok around noon, you even see quite a lot of peple in short-sleeved t-shirts and shorts. But then around 5.30 - 6 PM it starts to get colder and colder. We've had several nights with temperatures below 5 degrees C. I know, it doesn't seem so cold, in northern Europe 5 degrees is nothing... But bare in mind that most houses here don't have any kind of heating system and the walls aren't very thick so when it's 5 degrees outside it isn't much more than 15 degreen indoors and that's not a very nice temperature....

So funny

I woke up feeling a bit blue and annoyed this morning. These past 2 days a lot of things have happened, several old "friends" have contacted me all of a sudden after a very long time and that has made me really confused. I mean, how is it that when you finally meet someone you really like and is happy with, your old boyfriends turn up and ask you to come back? Some sort of 6th sense or what? They actually don't want you but they don't want you to be with someone else eighter.... And it's not just one person, I'm talking about almost every boyfriend I ever had and within 24 hours.. That really is too confusing!!!

So I really needed a good laugh to start the day off on the right foot. A friend of mine posted this link on Facebook and I laughted so hard that my tummy aches. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did! The15 funniest autocorrects from november

Multicultural Mondays #1

Going through some of the members of the Mom Bloggers for Social Good I stepped into a new blog hop which I just LOOOOVE!!!! It's called MulticulturalMondays Blog Hop and it's all about living with two or more cultures in your family. Wow, this is just the one for me!

I was born and bred in a multicultural family. My mom was born in Finland and my dad was born here in Spain, in Catalunia, which has its own language and traditions that differ somewhat from the rest of the country. Both of them left their countries due to bad living conditions and ended up working in Stockholm, Sweden, where they met and fell in love. At that time, the late 60s, people were not used to interracional relationships and I think life wasn't so easy on them but now, more than 45 years after they first met, they are still together. That really is true love!

Ever since I was born I was surrounded by different religions, languages and cultures, and to me, that's the most normal thing. We always mixed different traditions at home and chose the best from each country. What I liked the most was the fact that we got Christmas presents 3 times a year! But when I grew up I never thought I would end up falling in love with someone from a country far far away, just to follow the "family tradition" LOL. But I did. I fell in love with a Moroccan and got married. So by then, my family added some North African and Moslem traditions to our daily life and holidays. Unfortunatelly, things didn't turn out well, so I got divorced, but we kept some of the Moroccan traditions, for my kids' sake. Well, the multicultural story could have ended there, couldn't it? But no... I'm dating a Peruvian so nowadays we've also added a South American touch to our lives. LOL

I can't wait to see who my kids will fall in love with, will they follow the family tradition or will they find someone closer to home? By the way, my kids are about as multicultural as there can be since they were born in Sweden, then spent 4 years in Morocco and now live in Spain. My oldest son speaks 7 languages and he's only 14!!!!!

Mom Bloggers for Social Good

Yey! It's here, the opening day for a new project for mom bloggers - the Mom Bloggers for Social Good. When I first read about it I inmediately felt an urge to participate, because this is just what I've been looking for for a very long time. I'm thrilled to be one of the founding members of this project and I hope we can do a lot of good for many people.

The main areas this network will work with are: Children, Education, Maternal Health, Fair Trade, Workers’ Rights, Environment and Climate, Communicable Disease, Non-Communicable Disease, Access to Clean Water and Sanitation, Food Security, Malaria and Tuberculosis, HIV / AIDS, and Women and Girls. I really feel a lot for most of these areas and I can't wait to help out! Many of these areas touch me personally, so I'm sure I have a lot to share with all of you.

Please follow this network on Facebook and Twitter (#socialgoodmoms).

Time for a change!!!!

Only 2 days left of this horrible year... I think it has been one of the worst years in my life so far and I hope next year will be a lot better. I've decided to make some severe changes because obviously, something went very wrong this year and I need to do something about that.

My first change has been to download a new layout for my blog. It's still far from finished, it needs a lot of fixing before my new template fits into the features of my old one. I'm not sure I'll keep it though, I don't seem to get everything where I want it and somehow I don't have as much patience as I used to. I think I'm much more restless these days...

Anyway, I'm working on it...

Planning a beach party

My kids have their birthdays during the summer vacations so it's really difficult to throw a real party for them. This year I've promised them that we'll throw a party in June, right after school ends. Hopefully their friends will be able to come.

We'll have the party on the beach. I'm searching the net right now for party ideas. There will be 8 kids (all boys) aged 12 - 14. We've decided that we'll eat hamburgers (I'll order from a local burger) and have lots of snacks and most important, plenty of soda. I really need party ideas. I know they'll have a great time together, they always have when they're at the beach since they are all friends, but I want to do something different so it's not just another day at the beach.

Ideas we've came up with so far: beachvolley, frisbee, some sort of treasure hunt (finding sea shells and stones or something), play with water guns, maybe a sand castle competition.... Any ideas would be very much appreciated, so come on, please, help me out!!!!

My own domain?

I've been thinking about getting my own domain, something like www.blancainspain.com... What do you think? I've been looking around a bit and if I'm not totally mistaken, there's hosting with the name included for about 65 Euros for a year. I think I could pay that. It's always much more fun to blog at your own domain and it's definitely what you have to have if you want to make any money out of blogging. Besides, I think I could blend two blog ideas into one, which actually could make two very mainstream blogs into one that's much more interesting.

And since we're talking about blogs... Some friends and I are talking about starting a blog on Peru. I already thought about the name and it's GREAT! If/when we agree on all the details we'll get going. It's not going to be just another "tourist goes to Machu Picho and says áaaaaah!´" kind of blog. The idea is to link together Peruvians in both Peru and Spain with people in Europe who want to visit Peru or learn more about the country, culture or cuisine or whatever. I've already talked to several friends "over there" and they are more than happy to participate in this project. So what do you think? Would you like to read and follow a blog about Peru, partly written by people living there?

Anyway, I have a LONG day ahead of me! So I'd better get going.....

Yes, it's Monday

This weekend went by so fast! Actually I don't complain because I spent the whole weekend resting and relaxing, so I feel ready for a new week (or at least I would, if I only could keep my eyes open... *lol*). It's funny, I seem to be more tired AFTER I rest than before, why is that?

This is going to be a busy week. My kids are getting baptized on Saturday and so far I haven't prepared anything. I'm not even sure I need a godfather and godmother for them since they're 11 and 13. Ooops, I'm always leaving things for the last minute.... Anyway, it's going to be something small, just for the family. Maybe we'll invite some of their friends over for a game of Wii Party. I think that could be great fun.

Well, the kids are at school and I need to do my Home Blessing, so I'd better get going....

It did stop raining...

After several days of raining, it finally stopped. My DS11 was supposed to play his first football game this morning, at 9.30 A.M. It was poring down all night. We knew they would suspend the game in case of rain, because they play outdoors, although it's indoor football they're playing. :-/ Anyway, it did stop in time for the game, at 8.30 A.M., but since the ground was so full of water they suspended the game anyway. :-(

The kids practising this morning while they were waiting to know if they would play or not.

So proud of ME!

It's Monday morning, it's only 8 A.M. and I've been up and about for an hour already. I wanted to blog all day yesterday but every time I sat down to write something got in between, so I never had a chance to concentrate...

I know it's a bit late, it's technically Monday in my part of the world, but I'm going to do a Sunday stroll anyway. Hope that's okey, Vanessa? It' still Sunday in your part of the world...

I've been really busy last week. I got a really bad cold on Wednesday and got up on Thursday with my whole body aching. But this is really not the time to be sick, so I recurred to the magical powders sold at the farmacy *lol* I just love Frenadol! I don't know what it's called in the rest of the world but I guess you can get stuff like that everywhere nowadays. A few dosis and the cold just disappears on its' own... Well, it's not as easy as that, but almost... I spent the whole day on Friday on the coach sleeping and resting, I just got up to do my clases and then back to rest.

I was quite okey on Saturday so I got up early and did some cleaning. I had the kids clean their rooms too (those of you with teens and preteens know how easy that can be sometimes *lol*). Then we went to the supermarket far, far away. I really like to shop there, their prices are low and I feel like a get a lot for my money. The only problem is the distance. It takes us about 20 minutes to walk there, each direction, so it's not only good for the economy, it's also a great workout! *lol*

One of my best friends here has a son almost the same age as my kids so he came over on Saturday evening to play. The kids had a great time!!! When things got too noisy I took them out for a walk and then we went to the beach to kick some ball. It was such a lovely evening!!!

Yesterday was a really great day. We woke up early, went to the early mass and then the kids stayed at church for their weekly youth gathering. It's a pity so few kids these days go to church but at least they have a small group of teens going every Sunday. While the kids stayed at church I went down to the beach for a walk in the sun. It was just wonderful! I walked for half an hour and came home totally energized. I decided to chech my weight, which is something I haven't done in ages... I know I fell off the wagon big time and haven't been doing any exercise or even thought about what I eat so I was really surprised to see that I've lost 1,2 kilos!!! Wow!! I really do like that!!! *GO ME* Now I've "only" got another 8 kilos to go.... And since the weather is improving and the sun is coming back it will be a lot easier. So hopefully I'll reach my goal this year and be able to wear a bikini....

Yoga for Wii

During Christmas I bought the Yoga for Wii-"game" and I've decided that I'll try it this weekend. I haven't done any yoga at all for ages and I know it'll make me great if I get back to regular practice. I used to do yoga almost every day before, so I'm not really new to yoga, but I guess I'm like a newbie again since I haven't practised for over a year.

Anyway, I'll tell you what I think about it in a couple of days when I've had a chance to really check it out.

BTW, the sun is shining!!!! Wow... I feel so much better now... *lol* I really really am an addict to the sun....

Slowly getting to the weekend...

It's still cold, freezing cold actually. Ok, I know.... It's not as cold as in the north of Spain where the temperatures have gone below 10 degrees C below 0, and it's definitely not as cold as in Stockholm during Christmas, but it's still way too cold for me. Here in Spain most houses don't have central heating so it's COOOOLD indoors. One funny thing about living in the Mediterranean area - during winter we PUT ON more clothes when we get indoors than when we go outdoors....

It rained for a while today, and for once that made me happy, because when it rains at least it's not as cold. But the rain didn´t last for long and the temperatures went down again, but at least it was quite nice when I went out for a while.

It's Thursday tomorrow. I only have 2 classes and they don't require much preparation, so I'll spend the morning tomorrow finishing some board games I've printed out but haven't finished yet. On Friday I only have one class and it's late in the evening, so I'm thinking about going to the library to study in the morning. I really need to get back to studying, because time flies... I thought I'd be almost done by now and nooo, I'm far from even halfway through.... :-(

I also need to think about ways to get more students, because I don't earn enough to make it on my own yet. This month things are especially tough, so for the rest of the months we can't buy anything at all, not even any more food (except milk and bread of course, my kids are still growing). If I only could get 3 more students before the end of month things would work out perfectly... Oh well, things will work out, one way or another... It's just a matter of faith...

In case you're as cold as I am, listen to this cumbia and dance your cold away...

Lots of goals for 2011

I LOVE setting up goals for myself. Usually my goals are very long terms, spanning over a year or two, but what happens? Most of the time I get bored or sidetracked on my way and kind of change directions... That's definitely NOT a good way to reach your goals... I know I need to learn to break my goals into smaller chunks, so I can take it step by step and really achieve whatever I sat out to achieve.

On todays blog hop I came across a great idea - achieving 3 goals every 30 days and blog and twitter about it. Wow, I think I can do that... 3 simple goals... How hard can that be? It's all about taking baby steps...

Since today is the 23rd of January I'll have to wait until the end of month to join but I think that's just what I need, because it'll give me time to really think about what I want to achieve in February.

My first goal is defintely going to be: get more sleep! I go to sleep way too late. I'm a night owl and I love the peace and quiet of the night. But going to bed at 3AM when I need to get up at 7AM is not so great in the long run... I usually take a nap in the morning, but that's not really the way things are supposed to be... :-(

And the other 2 goals??? I don't know, I'll need to think about that...

Taking a virtual stroll

I'm a bit fed up with my blog. I don't know why, because I actually love to blog and it's kind of my way to let go of steam when things get too hectic, but I've felt so drained out lately and maybe that's why I've only been twittering and not as much as I usually do. I don't know... I do need to boost my blog, that's for sure.... I've bookmarked some very interesting articles about reboosting your blog and thouhgt I'd read them on a rainy day, and well, today seems to be the perfect day...

Since I had such fun last time I joined Vanessas blog hop I've decided to join today as well. If you have a blog and don't know what to do today, do come along as well and let's go for a stroll...

It's SOOO COLD today!!! DS11 was supposed to participate in a bike race today but when we woke up and realized it's freezing cold we decided to stay at home all day. We're not even going to mass - Shame on me!! I know, today I'm a very bad Catholic but honestly, I just don't feel like leaving home... I'll just read the texts instead, snuggled up in my warm, cozy bed with a nice cup of coffee... So I'll guess that counts for only half a sin, right?

Tuesday, 21 December 2010

Now what...?

It's raining - again.... And since we're going to Sweden on Thursday and will be away for 2 weeks I really need to do at least 3 more loads of laundry before tomorrow morning. Otherwise there's no chance it will be dry before we go and I just don't want to leave the laundry out on the balcony for a fortnight. That's like inviting the thieves over for tea....

I have sooo much to do today but all this raining just makes me want to snuggle up in bed instead... :-( Maybe a nice breakfast (with several cups of sweet tea) will do wonders? I'll give it a try, because I really do need to do lots of things... Two more days before we leave and my To Do list is getting longer by the hour and not the other way around.

Well, it sounds like it's not raining as heavy anymore.... Maybe my clothes will dry anyway... But just in case, I'll get the iron and iron those items I really really do need to take with me.

Time to get going!!!

Sunday already

This week has been really crazy. Monday and Wednesday were holidays so school was out on Tuesday as well. I had 5 days officially off work. It was GREAT! I really needed that. I did work some, but definitely not as much as I normally do.

Unfortunatelly the rain was pouring down most of the time and money was, as always, a big issue, so we didn't do anything special. But at least we had some time off and we got some rest.

Friday was horrible.... Normally I teach 90 minutes on Friday, it's my quiet day, but due to the holidays I did 2 more clases, so in the end I ended up teaching 5 hours. I was really exhausted when the last student finally left...

Now it's Sunday and I'm preparing stuff for next week. Only 2 more weeks before Christmas. Hooray!!!

Saturday, 4 December 2010

Wow! Five days off work!

The schools are out for 5 days and that means that I probably won't have any students either. Some of them already told me that they're not coming next week and some haven't decided yet. Anyway I have the weekend off, and honestly, I really really need some time to take care of myself. Working for 12 hours a day has taken its' toll on my health, I've caught a cold that is making me want to sleep all the time...

I've been like this for 2 days already and I'm getting tired. *lol* I'm really not the type of person who can stay quiet for days and just relax, I need to have something to do all the time.

Except for my health issue my working too much has also left my home looking like .... The areas where my students are - entrance, living room / dining room and bathroom are looking nice, but the rest is just a mess. I really need to take some time these days to get those areas under control, because I can feel how the mess and the clutter are robbing my energy. It's funny really, a few months back I only cleaned my home like every 10 days or so, but since I started to work at home I clean the "student areas" at least every second day, sometimes even twice a day... I've realised that it doesn't take such a long time to clean, if I just keep everything tidy and in its' place.

I've been a FLYbaby for several years now and I know that crash cleaning is no good. It's better to take it step by step and slowly gain control of the clutter and the whole situation. So my first step will be to take control of Mount Washmore and to find the winter clothes from last year that got crammed into a wardrobe somewhere when the days all of a sudden got warm. We're in the middle of winter now so it really is time to find those warm cozy sweaters and the gloves....

World Aids Day 2010

I really wanted to blog about this day, since I think it's a very important issue that affects us all. I don't know about you, but I know several persons I care very much about who have HIV and that fact makes it even more important to me. Unfortunately I've been too MIA lately and haven´t had time to really get involved in this day this year, but I still wanted to mention it and share the link to the the official British website

I really do hope they find a cure for HIV/AIDS soon, and I would love you all to make a prayer today for all the victims of this horrible disease, that is leaving millions of children without parents.

My heart goes out for everyone suffering from HIV/AIDS and all their families. A big hug to all of you...
